The Slug

It's not the most attractive name but this little teardrop caravan is an attractive little trailer.

The Slug is a custom build currently on eBay. (Click here to visit the auction.) It looks a fairly standard micro- teardrop construction, built by the seller to accommodate anyone up to 6' 1" tall with an 8' by 4' floor space.

Going, going …

The Going Cockpit S is an odd name for a caravan. The 'van itself is quite odd too. Dinky, compact, with a pop-up roof and a one-piece GRP body.

It was first manufactured in 2006, fell into manufacturing limbo for a while and is now being imported by Red Lion Caravan Centre in Lancashire.

Here is the listing on their site.

At 750kg and a shade over 4 metres long, it can be towed by just about anything - from a Mini to a government chief whip on a bike. And the groovy, racing-helmet styling doesn't make it look too plebby.

Here is Practical Caravan's jovial video review:

Heavy metal

Smaller, teardrop caravans are popular on eBay with some fine examples popping up for sale. Many of these are home made or small production designs and can look a bit … rustic.
However, here is a coach-built design which really looks the business.
It is a classic design but built in aluminium and steel and looks fantastic. The submarine-style portholes are a particularly neat touch. It only needs the addition of a periscope to look like a road-worth version of the Nautilus.
The trailer is fitted with battery, 2 ring and grill cooker, sink and fresh water tank and the rear-facing kitchen area is 304 grade stainless steel. The overall size of the trailer is 3 metres long and 1.4 metres wide.
The design was originally on eBay but the seller, Stephen Moffatt, is builder these to order and can be contacted at swiftfabs@aol.com

Airstream Bambi 2

Airstream has its origins in 1920s America but continues today as a luxury caravan - or recreational trailer, as they like to call themselves. Some of the larger ones are immensely impressive - if not particularly punk due to their size and the type of vehicle that you would need to tow them (preferably a tank). On the other hand, in landfill terms they are very green - almost 70% of Airstreams ever made are still on the road.

However there have, over the years, been a couple of punk examples. The most well-known is the Bambi, first produced in the 1960s. They have been made in various lengths but all aim to get folk into an Airstream who would not otherwise be able to afford one.

There is a shining example on eBay at the moment. (Click here to view the auction.)

This 1965 model is a Bambi 2 and it has been carefully restored, polished up and has a new interior. It has a nice combination of modern UK spec and period American touches.

Roaming mini

The philosophy of PunkCaravan is that small is beautiful, well-designed is ace, chinze is uncool.

The Romini lives up to this. It was a tiny caravan built by Romahome, the motorhome company on the Isle of Wight. Only about 200 were ever produced but they're a neat little box, with sleeping room for two and a basic kitchen. Only 3m long and less than 400kg in weight, they are a doddle to tow.

There is an excellent example on eBay at the moment (click here for link). One of the last ever built, it has an excellent spec and comes complete with awning - all for a buy-it-now price of £3500 or offer.

True blue punk

Look around any campsite and it's easy to see that campers come in all shapes and sizes.

There are the small campers - a lightweight tent, a cooking stove and an aching back.

There are the family campers - complex, multi-roomed (and possibly multi-dimensional) canvas structures which spring out of a trailer and occupy several acres. These often feature a pennant towering above them, leading you to suspect that a medieval knight may emerge at some point.

Then there are the caravans. For the most part these are huge, white boxes with awnings to match.

Somewhere between the aching back and the boring white box lies another alternative. The teardrop caravan. A bed on wheels and not much else.

Here is a splendid example, currently on eBay. (Click here to find the auction.) It's a moulded fibreglass construction, features a double mattress, storage cubby holes and has a large entry door, held up with gas struts. Once the awning is attached, you can sleep with the door up or down (dog optional).

It's a bedroom on wheels that is thoroughly lightweight, modern and charming.

A barrel of fun

An unusual bow-topped mini-caravan has appeared on eBay. All the more unusual because it is self-built, immaculately finished and being sold so that the builder can get started on another one!

The timber top gives it a distinctly Romany feel and the inside is rather fine - there's even a flatscreen TV. The mini cooking area is displayed by our glamorous model …

Here's a caravan which is different, striking and has a sense of humour too.
